After cutting acres of brush and now just grass I can say that my Rhino does a surprisingly good job cutting the grass smooth and even. Sharpening the blades (not real sharp like a mower) helped alot. For a given 3" or so height and mowing speed (fast) my cutter leaves fewer "survivors" than my finish mower. Of course if I slow down the finish mower cuts prettier, but for all but the most "lawn like" areas I've very satisfied with the results from the cutter. How it compares to other brands I don't know, as this is my first cutter and I've had it 2 years now.

I can't help you on the snow removal, but it sounds like the 4100 would do fine for most everything except moving the tree stumps. I don't know how your soil is, but here in north Texas I can't budge 4" tree stumps with my Kubota B2710 which is similar to the JD 4200 (somewhat lighter though). Pay a guy with a bulldozer a few hundred to knock those over and then drag them to a pile with your 4100.

A rotary cutter does a fair job on grass although not the quality cut of a finish mower. It does handle big weeds and brush much better than a finish mower however. You would be limited to a 4' rotary cutter on the 4100 which would be no big deal on 1 acre, or even 5 acres. If you want ot use a 5' you will need to go to the 4200 (which I believe is MUCH more expensive than a 4100).

If you truly don't require the quality of a finish mower, the rotary cutters are less expensive anyway, and the funnest rear implement to use. They ride roughshod over all kinds of vegetation and it gives a a feeling of power......

I presume we're talking about a finish mower here. You might try some new blades with the back side angled upward more for sucking the grass up into the mower. I forget what you call them. Bottom line is that you need more uplift from your blade action.

I've been having power steering failure since the tractor had 50 hours. Now it has 208 hours.As instructed by Kubota I took my 2710 to the dealer on Tuesday morning. A Kubota technician was there to "(a)make the tractor fail and (b) fix it". Unfortunately he didn't stay long enough to do (a) so he never got to (b). I had stressed to the Kubota service manager for the central region that it takes a long time for the problem to come up - usually a couple of hours at least. The guy mowed 2 hours and quit without experiencing the problem. They also put some kind of device on the hydraulic system that makes it simulate various conditions and it didn't fail there either.The final word was that "As far as Kubota is concerned we and the dealer have made a reasonable effort and shown that the tractor is operating as it should". I was told that in order for them to consider anything I would have to make it fail.Guys I'm pissed. You go to the trouble of getting an actual human from Kubota to talk to you and another one to actually look at the tractor and you trailer the thing and take it 30 miles to the dealer you would think they would test the thing until it fails. Why would I go to all that trouble if there isn't a problem? Kubota was interested in making an appearance of being willing to address the problem, but they aren't willing to take the time that it takes to duplicate the problem.He also said that in all the time I have owned the tractor the dealer was never able to duplicate the problem. Somebody lied, because my dealer did duplicate the problem back in '99 (or at least told me they did), changed the fluids at 58 hours that I had just got through changing at 50 hours, and then continued to experience the problem. I needed the tractor back for the weekend and they promised to come pick it up the following Monday which they never did. In the meantime it never was that hot again that summer and I didn't have the serious problems I had before.I called the owner of the dealership and he understood my pain, but there's not a lot they can do without Kubota's help. The dealer does not have much control over design flaws that they can't fix. He says he will come to my place personally if I am experiencing the problem, as long as its during business hours .Of all the 2710 and 2910 owners on this board that have had the problem I don't recall a single one getting the problem fixed. One of you got some kind of retrofit of an additional flluid line and filter like the 2910, but if understand it correctly, that didn't fix the problem, and the 2910s have the same problem also.It appears that the problem is rare, but to those of us who have the problem and can't get it fixed it is very disappointing and frustrating.It is a wonderful tractor otherwise, but I'm now have a really bad taste in my mouth about Kubota's handling of the problem. Because they weren't willing to expend the time needed to duplicate the problem I have continue on my own, with binding steering at 4:00 on Sunday afternoon when there is nobody to call.Those of you with Kubota tractors that are having this problem would you please email me at gtalumnus@earthlink.net. I am thinking seriously about a class action lawsuit. I think everyone with a 2710 should be given a new M9000 and 200 shares of Kubota stock.I am seriously fond of this tractor but I'm gonna give it this summer when its real hot. If I can't get anyone down to my place to witness the problem, or they won't otherwise fix it, I will be trading for a John Deere 4200.Alan L., TX

Go to Tracto Supply and pick up about 6 quarts of Master Seal. It comes in white plastic bottles. Put 2 quarts in each rear tire and 1 quart in each front tire. It takes a little time, as it is like snot and has to go in the valve stem.

I bought my Kubota B2710 in May of '99 and had a flat brush hogging the first day in very thorney conditions. I plug the hole and put the master seal in there and after 211 hours and 25 months I have had NO flats - not even a slow leak.

The stuff is harmless to your tires - will wash out with a water hose if you ever want to break the tire down.

On my Kubota 2710, LA401 loader, I push the stick straight up as far as it will go. You can hear a sort of hissing sound telling you it is in the float position.

According to Bird's specs, if you're talking about a 5-foot brush hog it might be a little underpowered. That is a fairly small tractor, and I would have to have 4WD. I can't tell you the number of times I have to switch to 4WD even just mowing, and its hard to even get a full load out of a loose dirt pile with the FEL without spinning the tires some. 2WD in that light of a tractor could be an irritation if nothing else.

I couldn't imagine my 2710 without 4WD, but then I paid a lot more than $6800. The things I would consider is how the Case compact compares to the big Case tractor quality wise. They might not even make it, and parts might be a problem. (Someone on here will probably know) The other thing is that you might consider a small 10-year old Kubota with FEL and 4WD for that price.

When I lived in town I used a Craftsman mower with 42" deck to mow an acre. When I got my 2710 and used my 3-point 60" finish mower I couldn't tell any difference - if anything the big mower cut prettier.

When I bought my Kubota the only thing I didn't like about NH was the modern look. The Kubota looks more like a tractor to me. Plus I know several people who owned Kubotas for years and had no trouble with them. The JD 4000 series were in short supply and you had to wait months for them. I needed a tractor and couldn't wait. I'm happy with the Kubota.

I don't know about the finish mower sold at TSC (probably a King Kutter), but with my Rhino mower my tractor does not like any tall thick growth at all. The finish mower would work OK if the ground is level and the grass is not more than 6" tall or so (and even that can be trouble if its real thick). If you aren't mowing very often I don't think you'll be happy with the performance of the finish mower.

When I bought my tractor I got insurance directly from Kubota. They just added about $400 or so grand total for the whole 5 years of the note. It covers everything, including falling off the trailer on the highway.

Unless you have some really nasty soil (rocks etc) you should be able to handle it with your tractor. I dug about 6" out of a 16 X 20 area in heavy clay for a deck in about an hour with my 2710 - didn't even use the box blade because of space limitations. All I did was pull the dirt backwards with the loader. If you have a 5% slope I guess that means it drops a foot in the 20 feet. You could dig 6" from the high end and put it on the low end if that will work for you.

I just got through spreading 75 tons of limestone rock with my B2710, loader, and box blade. The box blade will move material for you whereas the blade apparently will not. The rake might come in handy for the finishing touch. I have never used a blade or rake myself.

15-20 year loans are common, with 20% down. The interest rate is considerable higher than a conventional mortgage on a house. If you either have as many as 40 acres, or you are financing you residence on smaller acreage, the Federal Land Bank seems to be a pretty good option. My bank loaned 80% on my 24 acres when I bought it, but the rate was 9.5% while mortgages were about 7.5%. I'm right now figuring on doing a refinance with Federal Land Bank since we have now built our barn that we live in. Another option is to carve out a small part of the acreage for the homestead and get a conventional, low interest mortgage and then have a bank loan (higher interest) on the rest.

Of course owner-financing can be a good option if you can get it.
